It is a well-known fact that, 13 years into our new democracy, some township parents still prefer to send their children to what  used to be known as Model C schools and to schools in the former white areas. I won't go into the reasons for this trend.

Some township people have complained that many of these children express themselves better in English (as opposed to their own home languages). Some say that these children tend to think that they know better than their supposedly less educated parents. They prefer to go out with their white friends from school and seem to have grown apart from other township children.

Finally, some people have observed that such children seem to have "adopted white culture", which should explain, the argument goes, why some white employers prefer to hire them when filling "affirmative action" positions (it is believed that such children "fit in" into the company's culture better than the other township children).

Of course, this is more so among children whose parents have moved to the formerly white areas.

Are these viewpoints valid?
